Algebra 1 / Project Based /Self Study with Guided Instruction / Full Year
Afrocentric orientation
This course is primarily a self study course that offers projects in each major unit of the subject, pre-recorded instructional videos, and live chat and/or video streaming for 1 hour, 4 times per month. Dialogue about courses is also fostered on the Afrocentric Applied Learning Facebook page and created course group.
This course is taught from an African centered approach, where problems are placed in the context of real-world scenarios involving people of African descent. The course is not meant to replace a high school Algebra 1 course, but gives the Algebra 1 subject an African centered orientation.
Algebra I is associated with high school content standards within four conceptual categories: Number & Quantity, Algebra, Functions, and Statistics & Probability.
Algebra is the study of patterns and functions. This is a full year, project based course that will focus on the study of Linear Equations and Functions, Quadratics Equations and Functions, and an introduction to Exponential Functions. In this course, effective communication using the language of mathematics is essential.Correct use of mathematical definitions, notation, terminology, syntax and logic should be required throughout the course. Real world applications are presented within the course content and a function's approach is emphasized.
